Bad breath, also called halitosis, is an undesirable phenomenon. In society, at work, and even within the family, who has not feared one-day disturbing others with a fetid mouth odour?

1. Brush your teeth

Brushing your teeth is without a doubt the best way to keep your breath fresh. It is a simple and effective hygiene habit. Ideally, one should brush their teeth after every meal. It’s easy to have a pouch in the office containing dental floss, toothpaste, and a toothbrush.

However, brushing should be preferred in the evening, before bedtime, because during the night, the decrease in saliva promotes food deposits on the teeth, which causes bad breath in the morning.

2. Brush your tongue

During oral cleaning, the tongue remains “a great forgotten”. And to fight bad breath, you have to take care of it, just like your teeth and gums. A good percentage of bacteria is found on the back of the tongue, and these form a whitish coating which is the main cause of halitosis.

The toothbrush is effective in dislodging lingual debris, but you can also use a tongue scraper available in pharmacies.

3. Visit the dentist

During regular visits, the dentist and the hygienist can detect incipient cavities, by carrying out a general examination of the mouth and gums. They remove plaque, which cannot be reached by regular brushing. These actions help maintain oral health and prevent bad breath.

4. Proceed with descaling

Tartar is a deposit that forms on the plate. Generally, a biannual visit is sufficient to do the descaling. However, some people need three visits per year, especially seniors, who are particularly affected by the phenomenon. And the accumulated tartar generates halitosis. It is therefore advisable to consult a dental professional as to the frequency of the sessions.

5. Drink plenty of water

The ideal drink to prevent bad breath is simply water. Drinking a large glass of water after each meal helps rinse away accumulated food debris.

6. Avoid certain foods

Some foods promote unpleasant mouth odours. These are garlic, onion, and certain spices including curry. Tobacco, coffee, and alcohol are also among the foods to avoid. It’s time to brush your teeth more often!

7. Stimulate saliva

The production of saliva promotes good breath. Menthol lozenges and chewing gum, used sparingly, are saliva stimulators. However, these are small solutions that act temporarily and do not mask everything, if your mouth is not healthy.

8. Do mouthwashes

To maintain a pleasant breath, it is advisable to make mouthwashes once a day. These baths can be done with a commercial mouthwash, or with water containing baking soda.

9. Change your toothbrush

A toothbrush is an indispensable tool for oral hygiene, but after some time it can become infected with bacteria. It must therefore be rinsed carefully, stored in a clean place, and it must be changed every three months.

•When you get up, gargle with a glass of warm water with salt and lemon juice.

•Rinse your mouth with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, fresh mint, and water.

•Eat fresh parsley, rich in chlorophyll. Cardamom, anise, and cinnamon are also products that can help freshen the mouth.

•Biting into a clove or a coffee bean can chase away lingering odours.

•Green clay mixed with water freshens breath.
