How to get rid of cold sores

Discover how to get rid of cold sores.

At the slightest bit of fatigue, they reappear around the edges of the lips! Where do cold sores come from and how do you treat them?

What are cold sores?

Some warning signs announce the arrival of a cold sore on the lips: a sensation of heat and tingling or itching. Then, blisters filled with virus-rich fluid appear in a clump on and around the lips, and the entire area is red. After a few days, the blisters rupture, and scabs form, which will eventually fall off, fortunately without leaving a visible scar. The process takes about ten days.How to get rid of cold soresHow to get rid of cold sores

What causes cold sores? They show the presence of a virus in your body: herpes. There are several forms. For cold sores, it is the HSV1 virus, while in the case of genital herpes, it is most often HSV2. However, the herpes labialis virus is more and more often found in genital herpes due to the development of certain sexual practices with oral-genital contact.

About 80% of the population carries the herpes virus. Of these people, 20% show symptoms in flare-ups.

The virus often enters the body in childhood, through salivary contact or with the lips of a person in the eruptive phase, because the cold sore is contagious.

This primary infection goes unnoticed in most cases, although a complication called gingivostomatitis may appear (many painful mouth ulcers and swelling of the gums). The virus “hides” in a lymph node, and is forgotten until a small weakness in the immune system encourages it to take the path of the sensory nerves leading to the lips and their surroundings.

What triggers a cold sore outbreak?

The triggering factors of a cold sore attack vary greatly from one person to another and can be multiple in the same individual. For example, pimples can appear following an infectious episode with fever, another illness, or even surgery.

In others, it will be after exposure to the sun, or on the contrary after exposure to a cold atmosphere. Some women are prone to seizures during menstruation. Many patients see their cold sores reappear when under stress or emotional shock. Everyone must try to identify the triggering factors that concern them to better prevent herpes outbreaks.

When should you consult?

People who have been experiencing cold sores for a long time know how to react and can self-medicate. However, in the event of an unusual extent of the lesions, high fever, more severe pain than usual, or especially eye disorders (pain, tearing, the sensation of a foreign body in the eye, etc.), it is necessary to consult without the wait. Finally, crises of “normal” intensity but which recur more than six times a year may be an indication for oral antiviral treatment for a long period.

What is the drug treatment for cold sores?

Cold sores are a generally mild, unpleasant but harmless disease that tends to lessen with age. That said, aesthetic inconvenience and the risk of contagion are good reasons to treat seizures.

Indeed, in fragile or immunocompromised people, the virus can affect the eyes and cause herpetic keratitis with corneal damage, pain, and impaired vision. It is therefore important not to leave cold sores without a cure, for yourself and those around you.

How to treat a cold sore? The medical treatment for cold sores consists of a local antiviral cream that will reduce the intensity of the outbreak. It should only be applied to the blisters, and not to the mouth, eye, or genitals.

It is necessary to start the treatment as soon as the precursory signs appear and to continue it until the formation of the crusts. The therapy can be supplemented with an anesthetic cream, but this treatment is not suitable for children, who could swallow some of it.

What are the gestures to avoid during an outbreak of cold sores?

The blisters contain a clear liquid that is filled with viruses. Herpes is contagious from the first signs until the scabs appear. Throughout this period, you must avoid all actions that would promote the spread of the virus on your skin but also to others, especially children and immunocompromised people.

You must, therefore:

•Avoid scratching (including scabs);

•Avoid kissing someone;

•Wash your hands well after each contact (for example after applying cold sore cream );

•Never rub your eyes after touching the labial area. – Avoid going to the dentist during this period.

Make-up that camouflages the lesions should also be excluded, as should corticosteroids, which could cause complications. Antibiotic treatments are completely useless since they do not act on viruses but bacteria. Finally, this is not the time to exchange beauty products and towels with other people!

The cold is the enemy of herpes and if it is used from the start of the push, it remains an effective means of stopping its progression. People who are used to cold sores feel them before they are even visible and it is precisely at this moment that you have to take out the ice cube tray.

To avoid attacking or even burning the skin, it is advisable to wrap the ice cube in a cloth handkerchief. Thus, it retains its power, while respecting your skin. This is important because it will be necessary to maintain it for ten minutes on the area where the inflammation has started.

Full of vitamin C, lemon is frequently used in cosmetics and hygiene. Excellent antiseptic, it can stop the push and help faster healing. Thanks to its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties, garlic is a precious friend to our body. This is why it can slow down the development of a cold sore, and even participate in its disappearance.

Our grandmothers used it to treat herpes from the first tingling. Like all cold sore remedies, it should be applied preventively, at least at the first suspicion. All you have to do is peel a clove of garlic, cut it in half, then rub it directly on the pimple several times a day.

Apple cider vinegar can be useful in the treatment of a cold sore thanks to its astringent, anti-inflammatory, or disinfectant properties. For optimal effectiveness, it is recommended to put some on cotton and to apply it on herpes up to four times per day.

Honey is appreciated for its antiseptic properties and our grandmothers used it to treat many ailments. Like the ice cube, it is imperative to brush it at the first signs of the appearance of the cold sore. The ideal is to leave it on during the day, then extend it with an application in the evening at bedtime.

Green clay has purifying and sanitizing powers. This is why it often comes up in advice aimed at solving dermatological problems. To soften its appearance and make it smoother, you can mix it with a few drops of lemon essential oil, well known for its antiviral benefits.

To prepare your green clay poultice, you just need to mix a tablespoon with a little water to make a homogeneous paste. The ideal is to leave it on for a long time and apply it in the evening until the next day. You must also be careful with lemon essential oil because it is photosensitizing and causes an allergic reaction in the event of exposure to the sun.

To quickly get rid of a cold sore, you can use dried chamomile leaves that you will reduce to powder using a pestle or by chopping them as finely as possible. Heat them in water until you get a clay-like paste. Let the preparation cool down, then coat the cold sore several times, until it disappears.

Essential oils are real little soldiers when it comes to defeating a skin and viral condition, as is the case during a herpes outbreak. Truc Mania has selected three of them, which have proven their effectiveness in the treatment of cold sores.

For each of them, you must soak the end of a cotton swab with the essential oil and apply it directly to the emerging pimple. If you have particularly sensitive skin, you can dilute the essential oil with a drop of vegetable oil.

This tree, which is barely 30 centimeters high, is native to Australia and is from the same family as the eucalyptus. Thanks to healing and antiviral powers, it is a solution perfectly suited to the treatment of cold sores. The essential oil extracted from niaouli contains monoterpene alcohol molecules which are powerful antibacterials and stimulate the immune system.

You may know this essential oil like tea tree, and it has a pretty good track record for treating skin issues. Indeed, many use it to reduce acne, treat fungal infections or shingles, and even remove warts. As it has anti-inflammatory properties, it reduces the feeling of discomfort as soon as it is applied to the pimple. Then it acts as a natural disinfectant to eliminate bacteria while limiting the spread of the virus.

This is another excellent antiviral, antibacterial and anti-mycotic often used to relieve and eliminate a cold sore. Thanks to the essential oil of ravintsara, the pimple is slowed down in its development and its accelerated healing. This essential oil is among the softest, so it is perfectly tolerated, even by the most fragile skin.
