Although it can occur for no reason, hiccups often occur when eating too much or too quickly, by swallowing carbonated drinks or by swallowing air during meals, by absorbing alcohol, or by a change undergone in the food (hot soup, cold water)…

The gastric distension caused by these actions would stimulate the nerves of the stomach or would irritate the diaphragm. It is also mentioned that people who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day or those who are under great stress could be victims of benign hiccups.



To date, research has shown no real benefit to hiccups in adults. It would seem that hiccups are, in fact, a preparatory phase for the breathing process developed by the fetus and that our body would have preserved the memory of it.

Some theories also speak of an “imbalance between the inspiratory and expiratory neural circuit, caused by stimulation or damage to the vagus nerve, phrenic nerve, or brainstem” which could also be identified as the hiccup center.

Certainly, stimulating the palate would modify the nerve impulses of the center of the hiccup and would have the effect of stopping the spasms. CO2 (carbon dioxide) could also come to overcome the hiccups, just like the compression of the diaphragm.

Increase CO2

We must remember that we must increase the carbon dioxide in our lungs to reduce hiccups. Breathing quickly is therefore useless. This is the reason why we favor great restrained inspirations.

  • Hold your breath for as long as possible.
  • Exhale more slowly.
  • Breathe into a brown bag, as if you were hyperventilating, and exhale about ten times, very deeply.

Compress the diaphragm

  • On a bed or the floor, bring your legs up on your stomach and lean forward, into a ball.
  • Place an ice pack on your diaphragm (located below the rib cage, below the solar plexus).
  • Relax by lying on your stomach and taking deep breaths.

Stimulate the palate

  • As stimulating the palate would have an impact on the center of the hiccups, we suggest the following tips:
  • Drink a glass of cold water with your head upside down.
  • Take water in your mouth, cover your ears and slowly swallow the water in small sips.
  • Stick your tongue out until the hiccups stop.
  • Suck on an ice cube.
  • Take a spoonful of sugar and let it melt on your tongue.
  • Induce a sneeze by breathing in pepper.
  • Gargle with cold water.
  • Eat dry bread.

Stimulate the uvula

  • Lift the uvula using a spoon or your finger.
  • Induce a contraction of the diaphragm by putting your fingers in your throat, as if you wanted to vomit.
  • Rub your palate with your finger.
  • Place ice cubes on your Adam’s apple.

Provoke an emotion

Here are some things you can do together to try to stop the hiccups.  

  • Startle the person with the hiccups.
  • Convince the person, by giving them a challenge, that they need to stop hiccuping in the next minute.
  • Ask him to stop his hiccups right away, immediately, put pressure on him.
  • Tickle her!

Unfortunately, no trick is foolproof! You will have to find the one that suits you.
